Health Anxiety Counselling
Health anxiety can feel exhausting and all-consuming. You may find yourself constantly monitoring your body for signs that something is wrong, worrying about symptoms, or feeling unable to relax until you feel “certain” that everything is okay.
Even small sensations – like a headache, a tight chest, a racing heart, or fatigue – can trigger significant worry or lead to spiralling thoughts about worst-case scenarios. You might find yourself seeking reassurance, researching symptoms online, or going from one health concern to another.
Over time, this cycle can feel overwhelming and disruptive, affecting your ability to enjoy daily life, feel present, or trust your body.
What health anxiety can feel like
Health anxiety is more than occasional worry about your health. It is often a persistent pattern of fear and hyper-awareness of bodily sensations.
You may notice:
- Constantly checking your body for signs of illness
- Worrying that normal sensations mean something is wrong
- Frequently googling symptoms or seeking reassurance
- Feeling anxious after medical appointments despite reassurance
- Difficulty trusting medical results or explanations
- A sense of dread or “what if” thinking about your health
- Feeling tense, on edge, or unable to relax
- Shifting focus from one symptom or illness to another
This cycle can feel very real and distressing, even when you logically know you may be okay.
Why health anxiety happens
Health anxiety is often linked to a highly sensitive threat system in the brain. When your mind is trying to protect you, it may become overly focused on detecting danger in the body.
Stress, previous health experiences, uncertainty, anxiety in other areas of life, or a tendency toward worry and overthinking can all contribute to this heightened awareness.
The more attention you give to sensations, the more significant they can feel, which can reinforce the cycle of anxiety.
How counselling can help
Counselling for health anxiety is not about dismissing your concerns. It is about helping you understand why your mind and body are reacting in this way and gently reducing the fear response that is keeping the cycle going.
Together, we can explore how health anxiety shows up for you personally, work with the thoughts and behaviours that maintain the anxiety cycle, and develop ways to respond to uncertainty and physical sensations with more calm and confidence.
Over time, many people find they begin to trust their body more, reduce checking and reassurance behaviours, and feel less consumed by health-related worry.
My approach to health anxiety
My approach is warm, supportive, and evidence-informed. I draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Person-Centred Therapy to support clients experiencing health anxiety.
This includes working with anxious thought patterns, reducing unhelpful reassurance cycles, and helping you build a different relationship with uncertainty and bodily sensations.
We also focus on helping you reconnect with your life beyond health-related worry, so anxiety takes up less space over time.
You don’t have to stay stuck in fear about your health
Living with health anxiety can feel isolating and exhausting, especially when it feels like your mind won’t settle no matter how much reassurance you seek.
The good news is that health anxiety is very treatable with the right support.
If you are ready to begin stepping out of the cycle of worry and reconnecting with a sense of calm and trust in your body, I would be glad to support you.
