Breaking the Cycle of Overthinking

When your mind won’t switch off.

Overthinking can feel like being stuck in a loop of thoughts that you can’t control. You may find yourself replaying conversations, analysing decisions, worrying about the future, or trying to predict every possible outcome before it happens.

Even when you want to rest, your mind stays busy.

Over time, overthinking can become exhausting and can contribute to anxiety, sleep difficulties, and emotional overwhelm.

What overthinking can feel like

Overthinking often shows up as:

  • Replaying past conversations or situations
  • Constantly analysing what others think of you
  • Worrying about making the wrong decision
  • Difficulty switching off at night
  • Needing certainty before you can feel calm
  • Mental fatigue or feeling “stuck in your head”
  • Trouble being present in the moment

It can feel like your mind is trying to protect you by thinking everything through, but ends up keeping you stuck instead.

Why overthinking happens

Overthinking is often linked to anxiety, perfectionism, uncertainty, or a strong need for control. Your mind may believe that if it thinks something through enough, it can prevent mistakes or negative outcomes.

However, this often leads to more doubt, not less clarity.

How counselling can help

Counselling helps you understand why your mind is getting stuck in these patterns and teaches you how to step back from unhelpful thought loops.

Instead of trying to eliminate thoughts, we focus on changing your relationship with them so they have less control over how you feel and behave.

Many people find they begin to feel more mentally clear, less reactive, and more able to make decisions without spiralling into doubt.

My approach

I use CBT and ACT approaches to help you notice thought patterns, reduce rumination, and reconnect with what matters to you beyond anxious thinking.

We also focus on grounding techniques and practical strategies to help calm an overactive mind.

You don’t have to believe every thought

Not every thought needs to be solved, analysed, or acted on.

With support, it is possible to create more space between you and your thoughts so you can feel calmer and more in control.

If you’re ready, I’d be glad to support you.
